Notifications not working — troubleshooting
An error when turning on notifications, no notifications on your phone, or Brave — what to check.
If clicking Turn on notifications shows the error “Couldn’t change the notification setting”, or reminders don’t arrive on your phone or computer, go through the steps below. Remember that the bell inside the app always works — you’ll see your reminders there even when system notifications are off.
1. Check the status in the app
Go to Account → Phone and computer notifications. A correctly set-up device shows “Notifications are on for this device”. You turn them on separately on each phone, tablet and computer.
2. Allow notifications in your browser
- Click the icon next to the page address (a padlock or sliders).
- Next to Notifications choose Allow (or click “Reset permissions”).
- Refresh the page and click Turn on notifications again.
The browser’s permission switch alone isn’t enough — the device is only saved once you click the button in the app.
3. Brave browser
Brave turns off the Google service that push notifications rely on by default, so permission is granted but registering the device fails. To change this:
- Open Settings → Privacy and security (address
brave://settings/privacy). - Turn on Use Google Services for Push Messaging.
- Restart Brave (close all windows), go back to Account → Notifications and click Turn on notifications.
This option makes Brave use Google’s servers to deliver push notifications. If you’d rather not enable it, use another browser (e.g. Chrome or Edge) or rely on the bell inside the app.
4. System settings
- Windows: Settings → System → Notifications — turn on notifications and your browser’s entry; turn off Do Not Disturb / Focus Assist,
- macOS: System Settings → Notifications → your browser → allow notifications; turn off Focus mode,
- Android: Settings → Apps → your browser → Notifications (on); turn off battery saving for the browser,
- notifications don’t work in a private (incognito) window — use a regular window.
5. iPhone and iPad
- iOS 16.4 or newer is required.
- In Safari tap Share → Add to Home Screen.
- Open Add My Task from the new Home Screen icon (not from Safari) and only there turn on notifications in Account → Notifications.
- Check in Settings → Notifications → Add My Task that notifications are allowed.
6. Turn them on again
In Account → Notifications click Turn off, then Turn on notifications. If that doesn’t help, delete the addmytask.com site data in your browser settings (you’ll be signed out — just sign in again) and turn notifications on once more.
7. Still not working?
Reminders will still reach the bell inside the app. If you’d like us to look into it, write to the address in the Terms of Service and tell us your browser, system and the message you see.
